Stryker's America Photographing the Great Depression



A new movie at the LRC, Stryker's America Photographing the Great Depression, this DVD covers the Farm Security Administration's Historical Division during the Great Depression.

This is a must see for anyone interested in Social Documentary Photography, and as discussed in our History class all the FSA images are free to download from the Library of Congress.

Nikon Bob | Nikon D3s and 85mm Micro

Nikon Bob has sent us some new press releases, Nikon is coming out a Nikon D3s and a new 85mm Micro Lens. The Nikon D3s will have a Movie feature, a built in sensor cleaner and better low light shooting capabilities. For more info check out the D3s specs here.

The 85mm Micro Lens has VR capabilities, a close focusing distance of 27mm and a whole bunch of other neat and nifty feature check out the specs here.

Extreme Street Photography, Good or Bad?

As I am sure most of you have heard that Google Earth has finished doing their street views of Ottawa and other Canadian cities. This has stirred up some controversy in Canada regarding privacy, this Citizen Article talks about the issues facing Google.

As the web becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives these issues are extremely important to debate and to come to some consensus on. In an effort to engage our Photographic Community we encourage you to take part in our poll on this issue (See Side Bar).

Show - Ottawa Architecture

Thursday October 8, 2009 is the Vernissage at Exposure Gallery, 1255 Wellington St. West, for the show Ottawa Architecture.

This show runs in tandem with the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects', Architecture Week (Oct 2nd to Oct 9th).

This group exhibition showcases some of Ottawa's leading Architectural Photographers and would be a great show for those about to shoot their Architecture Assignment.

Robert Frank - Moving Out

Moving Out is a compilation of Robert Frank's work till 1994 including images from his phenomenal book The Americans this book not only has images but critical analysis' on his work.

The book was edited by Robert Frank himself so you know it's good.

Genevieve Thauvette Wins Gold At The Francophone Games

Genevieve Thauvette has won Gold at the Francophone Games in the Culture competition Photography division, she won for her images of the Dionne Quintuplets!!

History of Photography From A Different Perspective

These two books Photography A Cultural History by Mary Warner Marien and A World History of Photography by Naomi Rosenblum are books that survey photography's vast history.

In Photography A Cultural History Mary Warner Marien keeps photography's cultural impact close at hand as she pulls back the many layers of photograph's past.

Naomi Rosenblum once again strays away from the mainstream study of the history of photography with her book A World History of Photography and thankfully so. This book shines the light on many non-western photographers who helped shape photography's colourful history.

Henri Cartier Bresson Photographer

I really like people and things that just get to the point and this book does just that.

Henri Cartier Bresson Photographer is an exploration of this master work and life through photographs and text.

John Szarkowski - Looking At Photogrpahs

John Szarkowski one of the great MoMA curators showcases 100 photographs from the MoMA archives in Looking At Photographs.

This book like The History of Photography by Beaumont Newhall is a must read for those that are interesting in the history of photography.

This book is at the Learning Resource Centre.

Naomi Rosenblum - A History of Women Photographers

The study of the history of photography has been dominated by males, this book counters that trend with an in-depth look at the contribution women have had on photography's history.

A History of Women Photographers by Naomi Rosenblum is a must read for those that want a fuller understanding of photography's past and present.

Stephen Shore - The Nature of Photographs

Stephen Shore is a Professor at Bard College in New York State he is also one of America's greatest contemporary photographers.

Edward Steichen added Shore's images to the photographic collection at MoMA when Shore was only 14. He had his first photographic show at MoMA when he was 24, hung out with Andy Warhol at his factory and went on to produce some of the most interesting photographs of the last half century.

This book explores the "nature of photographs" and is a recent addition to the Learning Resource Centre.

Beaumont Newhall - The History of Photography

If you want to know anything about the history of photography you should start your exploration with this book The History of Photography by Beaumont Newhall.

Newhall was a co-founder of Aperture Magazine, Librarian at MoMA, curator of International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, historian and author of several books on photography.

He was good friends with Ansel Adams and other photographic contemporaries.

This book is of course at the Learning Resource Centre.

Edward Weston On Photography

Edward Weston On Photography is a discourse on photography by one of it's greatest practitioners.

This book holds valuable insight not only into photography but also the author, Edward Weston's technique.


The Photographs of Margaret Bourke-White

Margaret Bourke-White one of America's greatest photographers is celebrated in this book, The Photographs of Margaret Bourke-White.

Not only does this book showcase her work but also gives an insight into her techniques, style and influences.

Avedon Portraits

Avedon ascribes to the belief, like most Modernists, that a portrait can contain the essence of a person or at least aid to some deeper understanding of oneself.

This book is a photographic exploration of this idea, it is available at the Learning Resource Centre.

Roland Barthes - Camera Lucida

When looking at images is not enough and you want some hardcore theory and photographic criticism Roland Barthes' Camera Lucida is for you.

This book is not an easy nut to crack but if you can decipher Barthes you will never look at photographs the same.

It is of course available at the Learning Resource Centre.

Richard Avedon - In The American West

Richard Avedon's In The American West is a beautifully printed large format book showcasing Avedon's seminal photographic odyssey through America.

I can not stress the importance of seeing this book at least once if you are serious about the art and craft of photography.

The Photograph as Contemporary Art

For anyone interested in contemporary photography this book The Photograph as Contemporary Art, is a must read.

The book highlights some of the most interesting and innovative artist working in the medium of photography today and covers many of the issues and debates in contemporary photography.

Karsh Portraits

Karsh is the Man, this Canadian Photographic Superstar lived and worked in Ottawa. Producing some of the most interesting portraits of the 20th Century.

This book, Karsh Portraits, in the Learning Resource Centre showcases some of his most famous portraits.

For those that are interested in seeing some work by Karsh first hand take a stroll through the lobby and halls of the Chateau Laurier in downtown Ottawa and you will see many original Karsh prints.

Karsh lived and had his studio at the hotel for many years, the portrait of Winston Churchill was taken at the spot were the print now hangs.

Silver Meditations

Do you like manipulating photos, do you consider yourself to be more of a Pictorialist, if so check out this book from the Learning Resource Centre, Jerry Uelsmann's Silver Meditations.

Uelsmann's career focused on darkroom manipulation his images are beautifully surreal.
