Willy P. McElligott | New Book

Leading Architectural Photographer Willy P. Mc Elligott has published an amazing new book on Ottawa.  At the book launch Willy also established the RPM Charity for the homeless, this charity is named after his mother Rose Phyllis McElligott.

On top of this Willy is also donating a portion of the sales of the book to support the Ottawa Mission, the book is $50 and can be purchased online at shop.wpmcelligott.com.

Willy will also be donating a copy of his book to each of the award winners at our Annual Photography Exhibition this Monday May 2, 2011.

This afternoon, Friday April 29, 2011, Willy will be signing copies of his book at the Henry's in downtown Ottawa.

Jane Corbet | Judge - Best Magazine Cover

Steve McCurry | McCurry Portrait Award

ALGONQUIN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2011 Documentary photographer and author  Steve McCurry is sponsoring and judging the Steve McCurry Portrait Award.

Steve is a member of Magnum Photo and an award winning photographer, a Robert Capa Gold Medal Winner and a World Press Photo Winner to name just a few.  He is best known for his National Geographic cover photo of Sharbat Gula, above.

This is a new award for us that focuses on the art of portraiture.

Pierre St. Jacques | Judge - Movie Poster Award

ALGONQUIN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2011 Alumni Pierre St. Jacque is the judge for the Movie Poster award, take a look at his bio and his website the below:

"Born in Ontario from unknown parents in 1953 and raise in Québec. At 22 years old, not knowing what to do with his life, he registered himself (on a flip of a coin!) in the photography program at Algonquin College.

He had never touched a camera before and for the following 36 years that's all he did, besides having produced two beautiful sons.  For the past 11 years he has shared his passion with Leda, his 17 year love affair. They are known as Leda & St. Jacques he's a ''son of a gun'' lucky guy...!"

Carl Bigras | Judge - Best In Show Year 2

ALGONQUIN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2011 Alumni and author Carl Bigras will be judging the Best In Show Second Year image.

Recently Carl co-authored the book Lighting Methods for Photographing Museum Objects with Mylène Choquette and Jeremy Powell.  Carl works at  the Canadian Conservation Institute here in Ottawa.

Carl Bigras is not only an alumni he and Mylène Choquette are also part of the Photography Program Advisory Committee.

TVO Photography Month | Contact Festival

Thanks of Alex Pomnikow for sending us the info on TVO's 2011 Photography Month.  

From May 2-30, 2011 TVO will be showing photo related programming all month.  We assume they are starting the programming on May 2 because it is the same day as the 38th Annual Algonquin Photography Exhibition.  

The programming does coincide with the Contact Photography Festival in Toronto one of the programming sponsors.  For those that will be in Toronto in May this is an amazing festival and definitely worth checking out.  The month of May looks good for photography!!

Grad DInner 2011

Images @ Balfour Photography

Above are some images from the Grad Dinner on Friday.  Thanks to Professor Andrew Balfour for documenting the event and all the students and faculty that setup the dinner, a good time was had by all. For those that want to download the images they are in the Common Folder on the Xserve.

The students are now gearing up for the 38th Annual Photography Exhibition on Monday May 2, 2011 check out the Exhibition page on the Program website for more info.  

Creative Camera Project

The Common Camera Project is a very interesting idea started by Kevin Huynh and others from Berkeley California.  The project has sent out hundreds of cameras to individuals who take an image and then pass the cameras on to others, the person who finishes the roll sends it back to the Common Camera Project.

The film will be processed and the images posted on the Common Camera Project site.  The mission of the project is to "safely express, cleverly connect, and collectively create" what a great and innovative idea using photography.  I hope someone sends a camera our way!!

Ansel Adams' Darkroom

Marc Silber of silberstudios.tv produces very interesting interviews and videos on photography, offering great tips and tricks from leading photographers.

The above video is his tour of Ansel Adams' crib and darkrooms. Watch it to see how the master printer and photographer rolled.

First Year Portfolio Drop Off 2011

Congratulations to all the first year students upon completion of their black and white portfolios.

These images were shot over eight hours the day the portfolios were due. One image shot every thirty seconds.

The Stolen Scream: Noam Galai | FStoppers

FStoppers created this video about photographer Noam Galai and his stolen scream image.  This is a must watch for all in the imaging industry, Noam's story is shocking.

Algonquin College LipDub

Recently as most of our students know Algonquin College created their own LipDub.

Above is the finished product so sit back press play and have a look you never know who you might see especially about 3 minutes in, Amy you rocked by the way!!

Polar Bear Spy Cam

We are in the process of putting together our list of things to purchase for next year and we are thinking of purchasing one of the cameras above to study one of the wilds most elusive creatures, students.

This video was shot by renowned wildlife filmmaker John Downer.

Faculty Portraits 2011

Above is the Faculty Portraits for 2011, every year we ask our 2nd Year Students to come up with concepts for these Portraits.

The best idea is picked and the chosen student gets to photograph the Faculty, they also get to boss us around for a change which they like too.

CanPhoto.Net is up and running again this Canadian Photographers Network has a mandate to:

Searching For Arctic Eden | Jerry Kobalenko

Writer and Photographer Jerry Kobalenko is part of a speaker series presented by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

The presentation will be on the photographs and stories of his travels in the Canadian Arctic part of his recent book Arctic Eden.

The presentation is at Centrepointe Theatre on Wednesday April 27, 2011 at 7:30PM, tickets are $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

A new photo film, this one is about New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham who has been documenting street fashion and high society in his columns On The Street and Evening Hours.

Rémi Thériault | Alumni Update

Alumnus Rémi Thériault is having another One Night Stand at La Petite Mort Gallery, the show is called Memories For The Road.  

ARTIST STATEMENT

My earliest childhood memories are traveling in the backseat of my parents car to one of the frequent family gatherings or many times we moved. The only one buckled up in the large backseat of the car, I remember looking outside the window for hours at the moving landscape. I still find myself today contemplating behind the glass window, as a passenger or a driver. Attracted to the stillness of the landscape, I often feel mesmerized by the familiarity of foreign land. This collection of photographs is a first look into the relationship between my childhood voyages and recent travels.

To see some more great images and to have a great night out you have to attend the Vernissage on Friday April 8, 2011 from 7-10PM.
